About the College of Engineering

The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering and Knowlton School of Architecture are dedicated to innovative engineering and architecture education. The undergraduate enrollment in the college has increased from approximately 5,000 students in 2006 to 9,553 students in 2014. In addition to this growth in student population, the six-year graduation rate has increased from 75% in 2009 to 83.5% in 2014. In U.S. News & World Report rankings, the undergraduate engineering program is ranked 1st among Ohio universities and 16th among public universities.

The Ohio State University College of Engineering is nationally recognized for its commitment to undergraduate education. Our teaching methods—including practical, hands-on experience through project-based design courses; a focus on providing opportunities for undergraduate research experiences; and individualized attention to students—have proven to effectively facilitate students' academic and, ultimately, career success.

About the Department of Engineering Education

The Department of Engineering Education (EED) advances the engineering profession and enables student success by developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary engineering courses and programs; by modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering; and by integrating pedagogical discovery, practice, and dissemination through world-class engineering education research.

Serving as the focal point for the College of Engineering’s innovative instructional programs, the Engineering Education Innovation Center (EEIC) was established in May 2007 with a mission to enrich the student experience, strengthen the academic credentials of our undergraduates, and foster leadership through the Honda Professorship in Engineering Education. In November 2015, the EEIC was transitioned into the present Department of Engineering Education.

The EED provides academic, personal, and professional activities that are designed to supplement the undergraduate experience both inside and outside the classroom. In addition, the EED creates new courses and strengthens existing ones to ensure that students are well prepared for the ever-changing global employment environment.

First-Year Engineering

The First-Year Engineering Program teaches basic engineering skills to prepare students for future coursework, internships, and careers. First-year engineering undergraduates learn about the numerous disciplines of engineering, while courses in engineering graphics, problem solving, and technical communication instill invaluable programming and computer-aided design skills.

Incoming students take a two-semester series, which broadly introduces the topics of technical graphics, computer-aided design, programming in MATLAB and/or C/C++, engineering design and analysis, project management, ethics in engineering, teamwork, and oral and written technical communication. Topics and laboratories provide a broad overview of engineering disciplines. Many “undecided” freshmen use these courses to help them narrow down and declare a major in the College of Engineering.

The continuously updated curriculum, taught by faculty and professional engineers, exposes students to different engineering disciplines and helps develop the most up-to-date and practically relevant skills. All program options (standard, scholars, and honors) include a culminating, collaborative design-build project.
